Pilates is a form of exercise that is based on the anatomical understanding of how the muscles, ligaments and bones of the body all work together.

The exercises focus on strengthening, elongating and restoring the correct structure, function and balance to the body. Each exercise program is specifically designed for the person who is taking part, therefore making it a truly holistic approach to restoring optimum function to the body.

How does Pilates work and what can it be used for?

Mat work Pilates uses a series of exercises which uses your own body weight and gravity to achieve its results.

It works on improving mobility and flexibility to the joints, strengthening and supporting the core muscles, and helps to increase balance and coordination.

Pilates also has mental-emotional effects via integrating the mind, body and spirit, relieving stress, and increasing body awareness.

What can Pilates be used for?
By the nature of the exercises, Pilates can be used for anything safely and effectively.

By its influence on joint mobility and general strengthening, it has great benefits to people suffering from osteoarthritis, scoliosis and osteoporosis.

Whilst Pilates doesn’t claim that it can “heal” or stop osteoarthritis or osteoporosis it can help to elevate the pain and aches that are associated with these conditions. As it’s a low impact form of exercises it is also safe to use at any stage of these conditions.

It is an excellent form of exercise for pre and post-natal women at any stage of pregnancy and no matter what form of labour you have had.

The Pilates instructor is qualified and able to help and advise what level the exercises can be used to and what is appropriate for your pregnancy stage or post-natal stage.

Pilates is now becoming an extremely common form of exercise used for sportspeople from all areas of the sporting arena.

Pre Natal Pilates

Pilates is a perfect low impact exercise to do throughout your pregnancy since it trains your body to be strong, flexible and balanced without straining other joints. It can be easily modified to accommodate your growing bump. Pilates involves a series of movements and positions that help to improve strength and coordination, whilst also focussing on deep breathing and relaxation techniques.

The movements focus on your core, pelvic floor muscles and back muscles, which are all key to a good posture, balance and strength.

Some Benefits of regular Pre Natal Pilates include:

  • Strengthen your pelvic floor, which will help to support your bowel, bladder and womb as your baby grows and moves down.
  • Strengthen your core muscles, which equips your body better to cope with the strains caused by the weight of your growing baby.
  • Reduces back pain, by exercising the deepest core muscles that stabilise your back and pelvis. Weak muscles can lead to back or pelvic pain.
  • Helps with balance, as your bump grows you may feel a little more clumsy, or that your balance isn’t as good as usual. Pilates exercises strengthen your core and may make you more stable as you walk.
  • Takes the strain off your back and pelvis, by using stretches and positions such as on your hands and knees, which is a great position for pregnancy. Towards the end of your pregnancy, it may also help to get your baby into the right position for birth.
  • Relax and control your breathing, which is important for pregnancy and labour.

All of our instructors have Pre Natal Pilates training and therefore are able to adapt the classes to suit you throughout your Pregnancy. In most cases, Pilates can be enjoyed to full term and does not require any previous experience.

Back Care Pilates

These Pilates classes are designed for those people suffering from back pain. Even if you are currently receiving treatment for your condition these classes are designed to complement that treatment.

If there are particular areas of concern our instructor is able to discuss your condition with one of our qualified osteopaths.

By separating people into specific classes depending on the location of the pain, this aids the instructor in being able to focus on only those exercise that are suitable for that area.

Mixed Ability Pilates

These classes are designed for those individuals who have no previous experience of either therapy.

Whilst classes will be suitable for all individuals they are viewed as a general course rather than a class to treat specific issues.

If you have a specific area of concern that needs working on please look at the other courses we offer or indeed contact us to see if we are planning on running a course that may be more suitable for you and your specific needs.

1:1/Rehabilitative Pilates

£47 per hour/£23.50 per 30 mins

Also available at The Totalcare Clinic are individual 1:1 classes for both Yoga and Pilates. At the clinic we appreciate the importance of individualised rehabilitation and for those more acute and/or complicated journeys to full recovery, sometimes it’s vital a closer eye be kept on those participants in order to maximise their results.

We also understand that despite the variety of times and days offered for classes, there still may not be a suitable option to fit into our busy lifestyles. The 1:1 class therefore allows you to arrange a time that suits you. With all instructors offering this option, we are normally able to accommodate most requests.
